How do I stop masturbating as a Muslim?

Updated

In short

Treat it as both a ruling and a habit. The ruling: Islamic scholarship across the Sunni schools and Shia jurisprudence holds masturbation to be impermissible, with only narrow, debated exceptions. The habit: it breaks the way habits break — by mapping your triggers, surviving the urge minute with a practiced routine, cutting the porn that usually fuels it, and returning to Allah after every slip instead of spiraling. Guilt alone has never cured it; structure plus tawbah does.

Most advice on this question fails in one of two directions: religious advice that amounts to fear Allah harder, or secular advice that pretends the religious weight you feel isn’t real. You need both halves, honestly handled.

What is the actual ruling?

Summarized plainly: the Maliki and Shafi’i schools prohibit masturbation outright, reading the Qur’an’s praise of those who guard their chastity as a closed list. The Hanafi school classes it as prohibitively disliked — functionally forbidden — and some Hanafi and Hanbali jurists discussed a narrow, conditioned allowance for a person genuinely fearing they would otherwise fall into zina. Shia jurisprudence prohibits it categorically. No school of Islamic law treats it as simply fine.

Two honest notes on that summary. First, edge cases belong to scholars, not articles — if your circumstance feels genuinely exceptional, ask one. Second, and more practically: if you’re reading this page, the question probably isn’t academic. A person at peace with an occasional act doesn’t search how to stop. The compulsion you’re trying to break is its own evidence that this has taken something from you.

Why willpower keeps losing

The Qur’an is unembarrassed about what you’re up against:

Qur’an

And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful
Qurʾān 12:53 translated by Saheeh International

The nafs commands toward evil — it doesn’t politely suggest. A habit reinforced hundreds of times has built real neural machinery: cue, urge, act, relief. White-knuckle resistance fails because it fights the urge at its peak with nothing but intention. What works is what works for every compulsive habit:

  • Cut the fuel line. For most people masturbation and pornography are one intertwined habit. Quitting the act while keeping the content is negotiating with the tide. Deal with both together.
  • Map your cues. Late night, phone in bed, boredom, stress, loneliness after scrolling — the act almost always has a preamble. Change the preamble and the urge arrives less often.
  • Have a plan for the ninety seconds. Urges crest and pass like a wave. Leave the room, make wudu, pray two rak’ahs, breathe with dhikr, call the wave what it is and surf it. A practiced routine beats a strong intention every time — these du’as were chosen for exactly that minute.
  • Fill the space. Desire compressed into isolation explodes; desire diluted by exercise, people, work, and sleep loses its grip.

The tradition names the destination of this training:

Qur’an

وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ وَنَهَى ٱلنَّفْسَ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰ

for anyone who feared the meeting with his Lord and restrained himself from base desires,
Qurʾān 79:40 translated by Saheeh International
Qur’an

فَإِنَّ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ هِیَ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ

Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge
Qurʾān 79:41 translated by Saheeh International

Restrained the nafs — not deleted it. Islam never asks you to stop being a creature of desire; it asks you to hold the reins.

When you slip

You likely will, especially early. What you do in the next ten minutes matters more than the slip: perform ghusl (here’s exactly when it’s required), pray at the next prayer time, make tawbah — and do not cancel the streak of effort in your head. A slip after nine clean days is not day zero of your worth; it’s data about a trigger you haven’t fortified yet. The shame spiral, not the slip, is what restarts the cycle.

Hadith
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: A strong believer is better and is more lovable to Allah than a weak believer, and there is good in everyone, (but) cherish that which gives you benefit (in the Hereafter) and seek help from Allah and do not lose heart, and if anything (in the form of trouble) comes to you, don't say: If I had not done that, it would not have happened so and so, but say: Allah did that what He had ordained to do and your" if" opens the (gate) for the Satan
Sahih Muslim 6774 translated by Abdul Hamid Siddiqui

Cherish what benefits you, seek Allah’s help, and do not lose heart. That is the whole program in one line from the Prophet ﷺ: practical means, divine help, no despair.

The long game

Striving itself is the promise the Qur’an makes:

Qur’an

And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good
Qurʾān 29:69 translated by Saheeh International

Not those who arrive — those who strive. Recovery from a wired-in habit typically takes months of uneven progress, and every one of those uneven days counts as jihad al-nafs in the fullest sense. You are not failing slowly. You are being guided along a path — and He is with those who do good.

Common questions

Is masturbation definitely haram in Islam?
The Maliki and Shafi'i schools hold it impermissible outright; the Hanafi school classes it as prohibitively disliked, and Hanafi and Hanbali jurists debated a narrow allowance for someone genuinely fearing zina; Shia jurisprudence forbids it categorically. No school calls it simply permitted. For how a ruling applies to your specific circumstance, ask a scholar you trust rather than an article.
Do I need ghusl every time?
Ghusl becomes obligatory when semen is emitted with desire — which masturbation entails. Before you can pray again you must perform ghusl. The mechanics and the common edge cases are covered in our ghusl article.
Is it a worse sin than watching porn, or better?
They are different wrongs that usually travel together — most people's masturbation habit is fueled by pornography, and quitting them together is far more effective than negotiating with one while keeping the other. Islam's grading of sins belongs to scholars; your recovery doesn't depend on ranking them.
Will getting married fix it?
Marriage is the tradition's channel for desire and genuinely helps many people — but a compulsive habit wired over years does not automatically dissolve on the wedding night, and carrying it into a marriage creates its own harms. Work on the habit now; marriage is a blessing, not a treatment plan.
